Program

  1. day Arrival in Ashgabat. Pick up at the Ashgabat International Airport. Accommodation in the hotel. Breakfast at the Hotel restaurant. Excursion to the National Museum of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat sightseeing tour: Park and Monument of Independence, Cable Car “Asma Yoly” Lunch. Continue the tour: Health Path “Saglyk Yoly” Ertogrul Gazy Mosque. Dinner.
  2. day Breakfast. Visit to Memorial Complex in Kypchak village. Drive to Mary city. Along the way visiting ruins of Seyidjemal-et-din Mosque in Anau and medieval city of Abiverd. Arrival in Mary city. Lunch. Tour of’Ancient Merv” visiting monuments of Greater and Lesser Gyz Gala, Ashabs’tombs, Soltan Sanjar Mausoleum, Erk Gala Fortress and Muhammed-ibn-Zeid Mausoleum. Accommodation in the hotel. Dinner.
  3. day Breakfast. Drive to the archaeological site of the capital of ancient civilization – Gonurdepe. Explore the site. Return to Mary. Lunch. Excursion to Mary History Museum. Visit to the artists’ workshops. Dinner. Transfer to the Airport of Mary city. Flight to Ashgabat. Arrival. Accommodation in the hotel.
  4. day Transfer to the Ashgabat International Airport. Departure.

Mary velayat occupies 87 000 km2 and is situated in the south-eastern part of Turkmenistan. Administrative center is Mary. The velayat is a large manufacturer of cotton, and fruits vegetables. Cattle breeding and sheep breeding are the leading branches of the livestock. In order to increase the industrial potential of the region a number of industrial enterprises are being constructed. A lot of scientists and historians name Mary velayat “an archaeological paradise” because of the mounds, which hide ruins of ancient cities. This land is the native land of one of the ancient world civilization – mysterious country of Margush.

Description of main spots

Seyiljemal-et-din mosque was erected in XV century. At present the mosque is a place of pilgrimage. The portal was
faced with beautiful mosaic, representative two dragons looking each other with inscription in Arabic. But unfortunately the building was fully destroyed by the earthquake.
Abiverdis a second largest Seljuk’s city after Nisa, which was ruined by Chingizhan at the beginning of XIII century. It
is a city Northern with fortresses, mosques, administrative buildings and masterly. Today it presents huge interest to archeologists.
Ancient Merv – “Queen of the World” was one of the most important capitals of Islam
together with Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus. The greatest period of its glory was during the 11-12 centuries AD, when it served as the eastern capital of the Great Seljuks.
Their empire stretched from beyond the Oxus (the Amudarya River) to the Mediterranean. It attracted the merchants and scientists from all over the Islamic world. However, Merv could not fully recover from its sack by the Mongol hordes in 1221, when the wonderful ancient monuments and great libraries were burnt. The ruins of Ancient Merv are stretched on the area of more than 70 xm2 being larger the sizes of the first city district.
The delta of the river Murgab was domesticated by East-Anau type of Turkmen tribes in the beginning of the 2nd mil¬lennium BC. Together they have laid the foundation of the future country-Margush. The ancient settlements were found along the riverbed in the north and stretched to the south, forming several irrigate oases. The greatest develop¬ment and heydays were in the period of 16-13centuries BC. Capital of the country of Margush that time has been the huge settlement under a modern name Gonurdepe. The city of temples, kept its secrets under the sands of Garagum during 4 millenniums was opened by the Margian archeological expedition under the leadership of B.I.Sarianidi in 1972.
History Museum of Mary Velayat in Mary was established in 1968 as the Mary Historical and Revolutionary Museum and possesses a valuable collection of exhibits of various epochs and civilizations on the territory of Turkmenistan – archaeological remains dated back to Palaeolithic, Mesolithic era, Antiquity and Middle Ages; articles of gold, silver, stone and clay, etc.
